Groundswell - Review

Just about to finish this book by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff. There was and may be still is a lot of buzz about this book but frankly - this book is full of fluff. There is very little substance - if at all - in it. I would rather have a book full of anecdotes and some very innovative ones at that - not the usual run of the mill kind.

If I were to cut this book to size - it will be hardly 70 to 80 pages as opposed to more than 300 which it currently holds.

-1/10.

Happy Birthday Firaq Sahab ..........

Tehelka loves Congress(Or fears BJP?)

No one needs reminding on how Tehelka has conducted one sting operation after another on BJP. The Defense Expose and The Gujarat Sting Operation are the 2 examples that spring to mind immediately. And today when Assam is literally burning - Tehelka is mute. It's amazing. No shrill shrieks. No In Depth Analyses from the FREE, FAIR, FEARLESS Tehelka. Tehelka's coverage of Assam riots is conspicuous by its absence. Even the Mumbai violence that followed the Assam riots wasn't able to wake Tehelka up?

Let Assam burn. Let Bangladeshis run amok in Kokrajhar. Tehelka would rather busy itself blasting Chetan Bhagat,Baba Ramdev and casting doubts on Team Anna. Sure, that's way more important and easier than to be seen speaking in the same voice as BJP. It's better to keep BJP out of the power as it may open up cases of Income Tax violation against Mr. Tarun Tejpal. What's the point in being free, fair and fearless when their own survival is at stake.

Way to go Tehelka.... You Rock !

The new escapist fares

What do you think is the real reason behind the success of Gangs of Wasseypur,Paan Singh Tomar,Shanghai and the ilk. If you ask me these are the new means of escape for our beloved urban youth - the multiplex audience. Surrounded by the plastic smiles - mostly in their wall to wall carpeted offices, tired of English in their workplaces they(or us?) and recently migrated from their small towns to big cities, they want to escape to The Real India. A land where people ain't politically correct, where no one thinks twice before uttering MC,BC and the similar stuff.

In a way Anurag Kashyap,Tigmanshu Dhulia et al are doing what Sooraj Barjatya,Karan johar etc have been doing till now. Especially Sooraj Barjatya. His Hum Aapke hain Kaun was the movie that ruled millions of Indian hearts for a long long time. At a time when the great Indian joint family was disintegrating at a scorching pace, he sold the dream of a Ramayanesque family to the Indians who wouldn't mind shedding tears by the bucketful. Even his Vivah did quite well - especially in Bihar.

But times they are a changing. Had Haasil been released today - it would have done quite well. It was too early to make money. But the same director has been able to reach 10 times the audience with Paan Singh Tomar.

In the opening credits of Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap congratulates himself for being able to return to his roots - i.e. the rugged lands of UP,Bihar. But paradoxically - for him to be able to return to his roots and be applauded in the process - his audience had to migrate away from their own.

Times Of India's animosity towards Flipkart

Just sample these news items in last 3 months -  all from Times of India:

21st July, 2012 : Flipkart raises minimum order value for free delivery
....signalling the e-tailer's intent to end the price competitiveness it offered, especially in the books segment.
16th July, 2012 : Flipkart needs $150 million from investors
....Flipkart would be running out of money unless big investors step in the next nine months.
7th May, 2012: Flipkart faces heat of rivals’ discounts
..... Flipkart, the big daddy of the online books trade, is feeling the heat of competition.
Of late, TOI as been very very offensive towards Flipkart. Its only aim seems to bring Flipkart down anyhow - by creating negative sentiments about it in every possible way. TOI has also been totally shameless in promoting its own shopping service indiatimes in the garb of publishing news. Let us just look at today's news article more carefully.

1. The topic : Flipkart raises minimum order value for free delivery

Almost a month ago Makemytrip,Cleartrip and Yatra  - almost acting in a cartel like fashion - started charging Rs. 100/- as the processing/convenience fee for all the payments. TOI kept mum. I really wonder why? Far more people use these sites as compared to Flipkart. If TOI was so keen on publishing News - here it was. So it's obvious as hell that TOI  is harboring a grudge against Flipkart which manifests itself in such artificially created news.

2. The contents :

Now look at the above picture which TOI published in today's News Article

It's considered the golden rule of journalism to disclose any stakes the publisher has in the companies being written about. Even SEBI has mandated it. But TOI is totally shameless and irresponsible in ignoring this dictum. It's clearly promoting its own indiatimes in the guise of News. And even if we keep this rule aside - indiatimes has been around at least 5-6 years before Flipkart. Still everyone loves Flipkart because of their service. And that's the reason why they are way ahead of any other competitor. No matter how cheap others sell - unless they can bring up the level of customer care on par with Flipkart - they will lick the dust.

3. For some reason - this whole thing reminds me of TOI's  aggression towards commonwealth games simply because it was not given the official newspaper status(and the money involved) for the same. I just wonder whether Chetan Bhagat's article would have seen the light of the day if TOI had been given the contract.

In the end I can only quote Tony Burman :
Every news organization has only its credibility and reputation to rely on.
-- Tony Burman, ex-editor-in-chief of CBC News, The Globe and Mail, October 2001

And clearly TOI is losing its credibility with every passing day.

SHRI CHANDRASHEKHAR S. DHARMADHIKARI  is Khadidhari since his birth. Once it was decided that the Caste Barriers should be broken and man’s status does not depend upon his caste or creed, the first thing he decided is not to enter any ritual or Sanskar restricted to a particular caste. Though he is a Brahmin by caste, he has not adopted a Thread Ceremony and has chosen to remain Shudra. Marriage performed was also as per Special Marriage Act – a Registered Marriage, which is common to all cases, creeds, religion and is secular in nature. Total expenditure for marriage was Rs. Twenty only.
At the age of 14, he took part in Quit India Movement.  He left school and thereafter an order was issued by the British Government that he should not be admitted in any Recognized School.  He took active part in Quit India Movement.  His two elder brothers, father, mother and other family members were already in Jail, and he was the only male member left in the family.  Therefore, he avoided arrest and since then worked underground. Was responsible for various activities, which sustained and maintained Quit India Movement for years together.
His contribution to the National Movement now gets recognition from the Government of Maharashtra, when Government included his name in a prestigious list of Freedom Fighters, without any request or application, and is also granted Freedom Fighter's Pension.
As a Judge, his Judgments were outstanding. He believed that Judge should be Impartial, but not impassive. Judgments delivered by him, relating to Rights of Women, Adiwasi, Children, Insane People, Prisoners are land marks.  His Judgment delivered during the Emergency was a unique one.  In the said Judgment he held that  apart from the Constitutional Right, a Right to Life is natural and human right and therefore, even during the Emergency, a Citizen has a right to approach the High Court, as natural and human right to Life can not be taken away. As per this Judgment he entertained the Petitions and released the detenus, against whom there was no material. He was known as a most up-right, independent and fearless Judge.
As a Chairman of the Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority, he has introduced an altogether new concept and principle in the field of rehabilitation.  The concept “Pre-habilitation” and “Pre-Afforestation” is introduced by him, which in itself is a unique and revolutionary.  As per this Principle, before cutting a tree, authorities concerned are obliged to plant ten trees, before demolishing a house, authorities are obliged to construct a new house for a person who is likely to be displaced, and after the person is given a new house, where he shifts, then alone demolition of house is permitted.
Under his leadership, such afforestation has taken place in Dahanu Taluka.  The Six Forests are developed, which are known as :
  •  AANTARBHARTI UPAVAN – VILLAGE – KHAMBALE, TALUKA – DAHANU.
  •  KRANTIVIR ACHYUTRAO PATWARDHAN KRANTIVAN, VILLAGE-CHIKHALA, TALUKA-DAHANU.
  •  STREE-SHAKTI UPAVAN, VILLAGE-KODAD, TALUKA- DAHANU.
  •  SHRAMA-SHAKTI UPAVAN, VILLAGE-KHANIVADE, TALUKA-DAHANU.
  •  RASHITRIYA MAHAMARG MAHATMA GANDHI UPAVAN, VILLAGE - NANDGAON, TALUKA –DAHANU.
  •  MEGHARAJ DEVRAI, VILLAGE-JALSAR, TALUKA-DAHANU.
  •  BHARAT SEVAK HON'BLE GOPAL KRISHNA GOKHALE UPAVAN AT DAHANU.
  •  SEVAMAYI ACHARYA BHISE UPAVAN AT CHIKHALA, TALUKA - DAHANU.
  •  TARABAI MODAK BAL-SHAKTI UPAVAN AT NAVA-SAKHARA.

He is known as best interpreter (Bhashyakar) of Gandhian Thoughts, throughout the country.  Is very popular amongst the Youth.
His thoughts about the Women Empowerment are well appreciated. He is also associated with the Maharashtra State as well as National Women’s Commission. Today he is known as a backbone of Sarvodaya Movement.
His thought provoking speeches keep audience spellbound with sheer emotional and intellectual involvement.  It gives a new insight for solving problems. He is known as a good thinker and orator in Hindi, Marathi and English.  However, from the 15th August, 1947, he has decided normally not to speak in English.  Because on that day Mahatma Gandhi had told the B.B.C. Reporter to inform the World that Gandhi does not know English.
He is associated with various Educational Institutions and Social organizations.
He is actively associated with the rural development organizations, who are carrying on activities in the field of Health, Micro Water Shed Development Agriculture, Village Industries, Adiwasi Welfare, Women Welfare, Pollution Awareness, Afforestation and Youth etc.  He was also engaged in relief work in Gujarat, Kerala and Maharashtra. Balwant Rai Mehta Panchayat Raj Jagriti Kendra, with which he is closely associated, is engaged in training the Members of Village Panchayats, so as to empower Panchayat Raj System, so that it can achieve the goal of GRAM SWARAJ. Whereas SEARCH is working in the remotest Adiwasi area for overall development of Adiwasis, particularly in the field of Health. The work done by SEARCH has received Worldwide recognition.
